How it’s calculated
We take a sample of the account’s 200 most recent followers and check each for public warning signs:
- Bot signs: follows far more accounts than follow it back, the default profile photo, or an auto-generated username (lots of trailing digits).
- Quiet signs: no posts, no followers, an empty bio, an account under 30 days old.
A follower is suspicious with two bot signs, or one plus several quiet ones. Brand-new accounts start with the default photo and an assigned username, so for accounts under 30 days old only the follow ratio counts as a bot sign. The authenticity score is 100 minus the suspicious share.
Why big accounts show many brand-new followers
X suggests popular accounts to people who have just signed up, so the newest followers of large accounts are often accounts created that same day, with no posts or photo yet. That’s real people starting out, not fakes — they’re counted as “inactive or brand-new”, and they don’t lower the score.
What counts as suspicious
Older accounts that still have no photo, no posts, an auto-generated name and follow thousands of accounts are the pattern bought followers usually leave. A high suspicious share is a reason to look closer; it isn’t proof on its own.
