How it’s calculated

Engagement rate = (likes + replies + reposts + bookmarks) ÷ impressions × 100.

This is how X’s own analytics defines it — engagements divided by impressions — except that X also counts clicks, link clicks and profile visits as engagements. Those are only visible to the author, so a rate worked out from public numbers will usually be a little lower than the one in your analytics.

No impressions? Leave them at 0 and the calculator divides by followers instead. That’s rougher, because a post can reach far more (or fewer) people than you have followers.

Impressions or followers?

Impressions are better. They’re the number of times the post was actually shown, and they’re public: the view count under every post is its impressions. Dividing by followers mixes two things up — how many people saw the post and how many of them reacted.

Follower-based rates are still handy for sizing up someone else’s account quickly, as long as you compare like with like.

Reading the result

A few hundred impressions with a high rate usually means your core followers liked it; a big post with a lower rate often means it travelled beyond them. Both can be good. Track the rate over your last 20 posts to see which topics and formats consistently land.

Which engagement matters most

Replies and reposts tend to push a post further than likes, because they create conversation and put the post in front of new timelines. The breakdown below the result shows which kind of engagement is doing the work.

Tips to improve your numbers

  • Post when your followers are online — your analytics show when posts get the most engagement.
  • End with a question or a clear opinion people can agree or argue with.
  • Reply to early replies quickly; the first hour decides how far most posts travel.
  • Threads and native video usually earn more bookmarks and reposts than a single link.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my result lower than X Analytics?

X counts clicks, link clicks and profile visits as engagements too. Only the author can see those, so this calculator uses the public ones.

Where do I find impressions?

The view count shown under every post is its impressions. For your own posts, post analytics shows the full breakdown.

Can I calculate a whole account?

Yes — add up the impressions and engagements of your last 10–20 posts and enter the totals.

Is anything saved?

No. It runs in your browser and nothing is sent to us.
