Why SoundCloud numbers matter

SoundCloud shows the play count, likes and reposts on every track, right under the waveform. For an unknown artist, those numbers are often the only thing a listener has to go on. A track with a few dozen plays gets skipped; the same track with a few thousand gets a listen. Promoters, labels and blogs scouting new artists look at the same numbers.

What each service does

• Plays give a track a play count worth taking seriously. They are the best first step for a new release or a mix you want DJs and curators to hear.
• Likes back the plays up. Plays with likes look like listeners enjoyed the track; plays without them look like people clicked away.
• Followers grow your profile. Your followers see your new uploads in their stream, so every release starts with an audience.

Who it is for

Producers releasing beats and remixes, DJs sharing mixes to win bookings, rappers and singers dropping their first tracks, and podcasters using SoundCloud for audio. In each case, the aim is the same: make the first listen more likely.

A simple plan for a release

Add plays on release day, then likes in proportion so the track looks like it is landing. Grow followers steadily so your next upload starts from a bigger base.
