How it’s calculated

Engagement rate = (saves + Pin clicks + outbound clicks + reactions) ÷ impressions × 100.

Pinterest analytics reports engagements — saves, clicks and reactions — against impressions, and this calculator follows the same idea. Outbound clicks are shown separately in the breakdown, because for most businesses they’re the engagement that actually brings visitors.

Engagement on a search engine

People use Pinterest to plan: recipes, outfits, rooms, trips. That makes saves and outbound clicks the numbers that matter. A Pin with a modest engagement rate but a high share of outbound clicks may be doing more for a business than one with lots of saves and no visits.

Pins last

Unlike a feed post, a Pin can keep getting impressions for months. Measure over a fixed period — the last 30 days in Pinterest analytics — so older and newer Pins compare fairly.

Finding the numbers

With a free business account, Pinterest analytics shows impressions, saves, Pin clicks and outbound clicks for each Pin and for your whole account. Enter per-Pin figures to compare designs, or account totals for an overall rate.

Tips to improve your numbers

  • Use vertical images (Pinterest recommends a 2:3 ratio) with text that says what the Pin is.
  • Write titles and descriptions with the words people search for.
  • Make fresh Pins for proven ideas — a new design for a winning topic often performs again.
  • Pin seasonal content weeks ahead; people plan early on Pinterest.
