What a share is on Bluesky

Bluesky's share button does something different from the repost button. A repost puts your post in the reposter's followers' feeds. Sharing sends the post's link somewhere else: to a friend in a direct message, to another app, or into a group chat. It is how a lot of posts reach people who aren't on Bluesky yet, or who don't follow you.

Bluesky shares send one of your posts on to more people.

Shares don't add a public counter

This is worth knowing before you buy. Under each post, Bluesky shows replies, reposts, quotes and likes, but not shares. So shares won't change a number people can see on the post. What they do is put the post in front of more people, some of whom open it, like it or follow you. If you want a number that shows under the post, choose Bluesky reposts or likes instead, or combine them with shares.

How Bluesky shares work

• Paste the link and check out.

A post link looks like bsky.app/profile/yourname.bsky.social/post/ followed by a code. Shares work best on posts with a video, an image or a link, which people are more likely to open once it reaches them.

Which posts to share

Shares do the most for posts that make sense to someone who has never seen your profile: a video with a clear hook, an article link with a good preview image, an announcement with a date. Before you order, check how the post looks when it is opened from a link: the first line, the image and the link preview are all the person receiving it will see at first.

Combine shares with visible engagement

Since shares don't show a counter, people who open your post will judge it by its likes, reposts and replies. A post that has been shared widely but shows two likes looks odd to the people arriving. How many shares make sense

Match the shares to the size of the audience you want to reach. For a small account, a few hundred shares on an important post is plenty. For a launch, larger numbers make sense, together with likes and reposts in proportion.

A worked example

An indie game studio posts a 30-second trailer on Bluesky with a link to its store page. It orders 1,000 shares to get the trailer in front of more people, and 500 likes so the post looks popular when they open it. Some of the people who receive the trailer follow the studio, and a few repost it to their own followers. The studio pins the trailer to its profile until launch day.

Shares outside Bluesky

A lot of sharing happens outside the app. People paste Bluesky links into group chats, emails and other networks. When someone who isn't on Bluesky opens your post, they can read it without an account, and Bluesky shows a prompt to join. For a creator or a brand, that makes shares a way to bring new people onto the platform to follow you. Make sure the post makes sense to someone who has never heard of you.

Videos on Bluesky

Bluesky supports video posts, and short videos with a clear first second are the posts people most often send to friends. Add captions, since many people watch without sound, and put a call to action in the post text, not only in the video.

Check the link preview

When a Bluesky post contains a link, Bluesky builds a card with the page's title, description and image. That card is what people see when your post is shared on. Check that it looks right before ordering; if the image is missing, fix your page's preview tags and post again. A post with a clear image and a specific title is far more likely to be opened by someone who receives it from a friend.

What shares do not do

Shares send the post on to more people. They don't add a visible counter, likes, reposts or followers. Those come from the people who open the post and like what they see.
