What a like says on Bluesky

Every Bluesky post shows three numbers underneath: replies, reposts and likes. Likes are the easiest of the three to give, so they are usually the biggest, and readers glance at them before deciding whether a post is worth reading. A thoughtful thread with two likes looks ignored. The same thread with a few hundred likes looks like something people agreed with.

Bluesky likes add likes to one post, so it looks well received when people find it in their feeds or on your profile.

Likes and Bluesky feeds

Bluesky lets anyone build a feed, and many popular feeds use likes to decide what to show. Some show the posts with the most likes in the last day; others mix likes with topic or follows. We can't promise that a post will appear in any particular feed, because each feed has its own rules. What a healthy like count does is make the post look worth stopping for wherever it appears.

How Bluesky likes work

• Open the post and copy its link from the share menu.
• Choose a package, from 100 likes upwards.
• Paste the link and check out.

A post link looks like bsky.app/profile/yourname.bsky.social/post/ followed by a short code. Your profile link is not enough, because likes go on one post.

Which posts to choose

Likes do the most good on the posts you want new people to see: the post that introduces you, a link to your best article or project, an announcement, or the first post of a thread. Pin the one you most want visitors to read, then give it a strong start. A profile where the pinned post and the latest posts all look read makes a much better first impression.

Write posts people like

Bluesky's culture is conversational, and it rewards posts that sound like a person. Plain language, a clear point, an image or chart with alt text, and a bit of humour go a long way. Threads work well for longer ideas: put the hook in the first post, number the rest, and end with a link. Replying to people who respond keeps the post active for longer.

How many likes look natural

Keep likes in line with your followers and the post's replies and reposts. A profile with 200 followers and a post with 10,000 likes looks wrong unless it clearly went viral. A few dozen to a few hundred likes on a profile with a few thousand followers looks normal. Add some reposts on your most important posts so the numbers stay in balance.

A worked example

An illustrator posts a finished piece with a short story about how it was made and alt text describing the image. They order 500 likes on it and pin it to their profile. People browsing an art feed see a post that others clearly enjoyed, stop to look, and some follow. A week later, the illustrator posts that commissions are open and links back to the pinned piece.

Alt text and images

Bluesky's community cares about accessibility, and posts with images that have alt text tend to be received better; some feeds even skip images without it. Add a short description to every image: what it shows and, for charts, what it means. It takes a few seconds, makes your post readable for more people and is one of the easiest ways to earn real likes.

Likes on older posts

Likes don't have to go on a new post. If a post from last month explains what you do better than anything since, give it likes and pin it. New visitors read pinned posts first, and an older post with a healthy like count tells them your best work was well received.

Timing your post

Bluesky is busiest when your followers are awake and scrolling, usually mornings and evenings in their time zone. Post then, and order likes soon after posting, so the post looks popular during the hours when most people first see it. A post that picks up likes early is also more likely to be reposted by real readers. If your followers are spread across time zones, pick the zone where most of them live, which you can usually guess from who replies to you.
