What the replies say

The replies are short, general responses of the kind people leave on posts they like: agreement, a reaction, a short comment on the topic. They aren't written about the details of your post, so they work best on posts with a clear, broad point, such as an announcement, a question or a share of your work. Reply to them yourself; a post where the author answers looks alive.

Bluesky lets you limit who can reply to a post, for example to people you follow or mention. If you have set a limit, change it to everyone before you order; otherwise the replies can't be posted.

Turn replies into real discussion

The best way to get real replies is to ask for them. End a post with a question, ask people to share their experience, or post something they will want to add to. Answer the first replies quickly and by name. Quote the most interesting reply to bring it to your followers' attention. A thread where the author takes part tends to keep growing.

Moderation

Bluesky has good tools for keeping a conversation healthy: you can hide replies, mute words and block accounts, and you can subscribe to moderation lists. Use them. A tidy reply section, where spam and abuse are hidden quickly, keeps real readers coming back to comment.

How many replies look natural

Keep replies in proportion to the post's likes and your followers. A post with 30 likes and 250 replies looks odd. On most posts, replies are a fraction of likes; on questions and debates they are higher. A dozen or two replies on a post with a few hundred likes looks like a real discussion.

A worked example

A newsletter writer posts a link to a new issue on remote work, with the question "What's the one tool your team couldn't do without?" They order 25 replies so the thread doesn't start empty, then answer each one. Readers who arrive see a conversation already going, add their own tools, and some subscribe to the newsletter. The writer quotes the best answers in the next issue.

Replies and Bluesky threads

On Bluesky, replies are shown in a threaded view under the post, and people can reply to replies. A busy thread keeps a post active: each new reply can bring it back to the attention of people following the discussion. That is why replies help most on posts you want to keep alive for a while, such as a question, a launch or an opinion.

Comments in your own words

Our replies are general, so they can't mention details of your post. If you want specific points raised, add them yourself in a reply to your own post, or ask a colleague to. A thread with a mix of short reactions and a few detailed replies looks like a real discussion.

Posts that suit replies

Replies help most on posts that invite a response: a question to your followers, a "which would you choose?" post, an announcement people will have questions about, or a strong opinion in your field. On a plain link post, a long thread of replies can look out of place. Choose the post where you would expect real people to want to talk, and give that one a start. Then stay around for an hour or so to answer the first real replies.

Protect your login

Turn on two-factor authentication and use app passwords for third-party tools. Nobody needs your password to add replies to a public post, including us.

What comments do not do
