How posts spread on Bluesky
Bluesky has no single algorithm deciding what everyone sees. A lot of what spreads, spreads by hand: someone reposts a post they like, it appears in their followers' Following feed, and some of those people repost it again. Reposts are the clearest sign that a post was worth passing on, and the repost count shows under every post next to replies and likes.
Bluesky reposts add reposts to one post. You can choose plain reposts or quote posts.
Reposts and quote posts
- A repost shares your post as it is with the reposter's followers.
- A quote post shares it with a short comment on top, as a new post that links back to yours. Bluesky counts quotes separately, and readers can open the list of quotes to see what people said.
Plain reposts raise the number quickly and cheaply. Quote posts cost more because each one is a new post with its own text, and they make your post look talked about, not just passed along.
How Bluesky reposts work

A post link looks like bsky.app/profile/yourname.bsky.social/post/ followed by a code. If you have turned off quote posts for this post in Bluesky's settings, quote posts can't be added, so choose plain reposts or turn quoting back on.

Make posts people repost
People repost what they want their own followers to see: a useful link, a clear explanation, a striking image, news in their field or a good joke. Which to choose

How many reposts look natural
Reposts are usually fewer than likes. A post with 100 likes and 5,000 reposts looks strange; one with a few hundred likes and a few dozen reposts looks like it is travelling. Quote posts are fewer again. Add likes to the same post so the numbers sit in a believable order.

A climate scientist posts a thread explaining a new study in plain language, with a chart and alt text. They order 250 plain reposts and 100 quote posts on the first post of the thread. Followers of the accounts that shared it see the thread in their feeds, and a science journalist quotes it with her own comment. The scientist pins the thread to their profile and links to the paper.
Reposts and the Following feed
Many Bluesky users read their Following feed in order, which means a repost puts your post in front of the reposter's followers at the moment they open the app. That is why reposts spread posts so quickly on Bluesky. If a post is time-sensitive, such as an event today or a launch this week, order reposts soon after posting, while the post is still fresh for the people who see it.
Reposts on older posts
Reposts don't have to go on new posts. If an older post explains your work well, repost it yourself to bring it back into your followers' feeds, and add reposts so it travels further the second time. Bluesky shows reposts in the order they happen, so an older post can find a new audience this way.

Turn on two-factor authentication, and use app passwords for any tools you connect. We never need either.
