Keep likes in proportion

On YouTube, likes are usually a small share of views. A video with 500 views and 400 likes looks as odd as one with 100,000 views and 20 likes. If you're also buying views, add likes in a sensible ratio.

Beyond likes

Asking viewers to like the video - once, near a moment they're enjoying - works better than a generic plea at the start. Pinning a comment with a question gives people a reason to engage further, and comments make the video look discussed as well as liked.

Where likes do the most work

• The first day of a new upload. Most of a video's early audience are subscribers deciding whether to watch now or later. A visible like count tips some of them toward now.

Dislikes aren't public anymore

YouTube hid public dislike counts in 2021. Viewers see only the like count, and creators still see both in YouTube Studio. That makes the like number the only visible rating signal on a video, and it's why an empty one stands out.
