Why poll votes matter on X

A poll on X is a question with a few answers and a timer. Every reader sees the total number of votes under it, and once they vote, or once the poll ends, they see the result for each answer. A poll with a high vote count looks like a question many people cared about, and readers are more likely to join in. A poll with a handful of votes often ends up a footnote.

X poll votes add votes to your poll while it is open. They give the total a confident start, and they can go on the answer you want to lead.

How X polls work

A poll can have up to four answers and runs for a length you choose when you post it, from a few minutes up to a week. Votes are anonymous: nobody, including the poll's author, sees who voted for what. When the timer runs out, the poll closes and the final percentages are shown to everyone. A poll cannot be edited or reopened once it has been posted, so check the question and answers before you post.

How X poll votes work

• Post the poll from a public account, with enough time left for the order.
• Copy its link from the share button on the post.
• Place the order with that link and the amount you want.
• Tell us the answer: send your order number and the answer (for example "answer 1" or its text) through our contact page. Without it, votes are spread across the answers.

A poll link looks like x.com/yourusername/status/…. Votes cannot be added after the poll has closed, so order early in its run. For short polls of a few minutes or hours, there may not be enough time, so a poll of a day or more is the safer choice.

A note on contests

Keep the question short and the answers clear. Polls work best when the answer is a matter of taste or opinion ("Which do you use?", "Best album of the year?") rather than a fact readers can look up. Use all four answers when you can, and make the last one a light-hearted option; people often vote just to pick it. Reply to the poll with your own answer and why, which starts the conversation in the replies.

How many votes look natural

Keep the votes in line with your account. A poll with 40,000 votes from an account with 300 followers and posts that usually get a few hundred views looks wrong. A poll with a few hundred to a few thousand votes on an account of a few thousand followers looks like a poll that travelled. When you put votes on one answer, leave the others with a believable share.

A worked example

A football podcast posts a poll before the weekend's big match, asking who will win, with four answers including "a draw nobody wants". The poll runs for two days. The podcast orders votes spread across the answers, so the poll has a strong total within the first hours. Fans see a busy poll, vote and argue in the replies. After the match, the podcast quotes the poll's result in its next episode and posts a new one.

Choose the right poll length

A short poll creates urgency but gives readers little time to find it. A longer poll collects more real votes, especially from followers in other time zones, and gives an order enough time to finish. For most accounts a poll of one or two days works well. Post it when your followers are most active, which your analytics show.
