What a repost is on Instagram

For years, the only way to repost something on Instagram was to share it to your story or use a third-party app. Instagram now has a built-in Repost button on public Reels and posts. When someone reposts your content, it appears in a Reposts tab on their profile and can be shown to their followers, with your name and the original post kept intact. The post itself shows how many times it has been reposted.

A repost is a stronger signal than a like. It means another account was willing to put your post on its own profile. Instagram reposts raise that count on one Reel or post, so the content looks like something other people are happy to stand behind.

Reposts, shares and story shares

• Shares send a post privately in a direct message, or add it to a story for 24 hours.
• Reposts put the post on the reposter's profile, in their Reposts tab, where it stays.
• Likes and saves are personal reactions that do not put the post anywhere new.

How Instagram reposts work

• Choose one public post or Reel.
• Copy its link from the three-dot menu or the share sheet.
• Paste the link on the order form, pick the amount and check out.

A post link looks like instagram.com/reel/… or instagram.com/p/…. The account must be public, because only public posts can be reposted. Your profile link is not enough, because reposts go on one post.

Make content people repost

People repost things that say something about them: a quote they agree with, a joke that fits their sense of humour, a tip they want their followers to have, or art they want on their profile. Ask yourself whether someone would be proud to have your post in their Reposts tab. Clear on-screen text helps, because a repost is often seen by people who do not know you, so the post has to make sense on its own. Put your handle in the image or video too, so the credit travels with it.

Keep your work credited

A native repost always keeps the original creator's name on the post. That is one of its advantages over screenshots and reuploads. If you find your content reposted without credit by other means, you can report it through Instagram's intellectual property tools. Adding a small watermark or your handle on screen makes uncredited copies less useful to the people who take them.

How many reposts look natural

Reposts should fit the rest of the post. A Reel with 200 likes and 5,000 reposts looks wrong; one with a few thousand likes and a few dozen reposts looks like a post people are passing around. Reposts are usually much lower than likes, often lower than shares, so keep them modest. Quote and meme content naturally carries more reposts than personal posts.

A worked example

An illustrator posts a short time-lapse Reel of a new piece, with their handle in the corner of the frame. They add a modest number of reposts alongside some likes and saves. Visitors to the Reel see that other accounts have put it on their profiles, which makes it look like work worth keeping, and some of them repost it too. A small brand that sees the piece in a repost contacts the illustrator about a commission.

Turn reposts into followers

When your post appears in someone's Reposts tab, their followers see your name on it. Make that first impression count: a clear profile photo, a bio that says what you post, and a grid where the next few posts are as strong as the one they found. Reply to comments on the reposted post quickly, because new visitors often read the comments before they decide to follow.

Before you order

• Make sure the account is public.
• Use the link to one post or Reel, not your profile.
• Check that reposting is not turned off for the post in its settings.
• Do not delete or archive the post while the order is running.

What reposts do not do

Reposts raise the repost count on the post. They do not add followers, comments or likes, and they do not decide whether Instagram recommends the post. Followers and conversations come from the people who see your content.
