When a play counts on Spotify
Spotify counts a stream when a track has played for at least 30 seconds. Skips before that are not counted. Play counts are shown publicly on your artist page for popular tracks and on album pages, while Spotify for Artists shows the detail: streams, listeners, where people found the track and which playlists played it.
Plays and royalties
Spotify pays royalties only on tracks that reach a minimum number of streams in a year, 1,000 at the time of writing, and plays from artificial sources are not eligible. Treat the trial as a way to give a new release a visible start, not as income. If streaming royalties matter to you, check Spotify's current rules with your distributor.

Play counts on Spotify
Spotify shows a play count next to each of an artist's popular tracks once it passes 1,000 plays; below that, it shows no number. So a new release that has not reached 1,000 plays looks visibly emptier on your artist page than tracks that have.
