How posts travel on Tumblr

Tumblr works differently from most social networks. There is no public follower count on your blog and no algorithm that decides everything. Instead, posts spread through reblogs. When someone reblogs your post, it appears on their blog and in the dashboards of everyone who follows them, with your name on the original. If their followers reblog it too, it keeps travelling, sometimes for years.

Under every post, Tumblr shows its notes: the total of likes, reblogs and replies. Readers glance at the notes to see whether a post has been widely shared. A post with three notes looks unseen; one with a few hundred looks like something the community has passed around.

Tumblr reblogs add reblogs to one post, raising its notes count.

Why reblogs matter more than likes

A like on Tumblr is private appreciation; it does not put the post anywhere new. A reblog shares it with a new set of followers. That is why artists and writers on Tumblr care about reblogs most: they are how work is found. Reblogs also show in a post's notes as a list of blogs that shared it, which readers sometimes browse to find blogs like yours.

How Tumblr reblogs work

  • Open the post on your blog and copy its link.
  • Paste the link on the order form, choose the amount and check out.
  • Keep the post public while the order runs.

A post link looks like tumblr.com/yourblog/123456789012 or yourblog.tumblr.com/post/123456789012. Your blog's link alone is not enough, because reblogs go on one post. Make sure reblogs are allowed on the post; Tumblr lets you turn them off for individual posts.

Who buys Tumblr reblogs

  • Artists and illustrators sharing new pieces and commission sheets.
  • Writers posting fiction, poetry and fan works.
  • Photographers sharing sets and portfolios.
  • Fandom blogs posting edits, gifsets and analysis.
  • Indie game developers and musicians announcing releases.
  • Small shops posting handmade goods.

Tag your posts well

On Tumblr, tags are how people find posts outside their dashboard. Readers search tags and follow them. Use specific tags that describe the post: the fandom, the characters, the medium, the style. Tumblr pays attention to the first few tags on a post for search, so put the most important ones first. Tags are also where Tumblr users chat ("#this is so good"), but those conversational tags do not help discovery.

Make posts people reblog

People reblog what they want on their own blog: art they love, a joke that fits their humour, a quote that says something for them, a gifset of a favourite scene, or a useful resource. Put your best image first, add a short caption, and credit yourself in the image if it is art, so the credit travels with every reblog. Avoid asking for reblogs in every post; one line on a commission post or an important announcement is enough.

Keep your work credited

A reblog always keeps the original poster's name. Reposts, where someone saves your art and uploads it as their own, do not. Tumblr's community strongly prefers reblogs to reposts, and many artists add "please reblog, don't repost" to their posts. A watermark or signature in a corner of the image helps when your work does get reposted elsewhere.

How many reblogs look natural

Notes on Tumblr can vary enormously, from a handful on everyday posts to tens of thousands on viral ones. Keep reblogs in proportion to your blog and your other posts. A small blog whose last ten posts have a few notes each, and one post with 30,000, looks like something went viral; that does happen, but it draws attention. A few dozen to a few hundred notes on an important post looks like healthy sharing.

A worked example

An illustrator opens commissions and makes a Tumblr post with examples, prices and a contact link. They tag it with their art style, their main fandoms and "commissions open", and add a small signature to every example. They order reblogs on the post so it starts with a healthy notes count. Followers of the blogs that reblog it see the post on their dashboards, and some reblog it again. Over the next weeks, the illustrator gets commission requests from people who found the post through those reblogs.

Queue and schedule your posts

Tumblr's queue lets you line up posts to publish at set times through the day. Use it to post when your followers are most active, and to keep your blog active on days when you are busy. A steady flow of posts keeps followers seeing your work in their dashboards.

Before you order

  • Make sure the post is public and reblogs are allowed.
  • Use the link to one post, not your blog.
  • Do not delete the post while the order runs.

What reblogs do not do

Reblogs add reblogs and raise the notes count. They do not add followers, likes or replies, and they do not decide where Tumblr shows your post in search or recommendations. Followers come from people who like your work.

No password needed

We only need the public post link. We never ask for your Tumblr login, and nothing is posted from your account.

How to buy Tumblr reblogs

  1. Copy the link to one public post.
  2. Choose the amount on the order form.
  3. Paste the link and check out. Keep reblogs turned on for the post.
