Friends and followers on Facebook

A personal Facebook profile has two kinds of audience. Friends are a two-way connection: someone sends a request, you accept it, and you both see each other's posts. Followers are one-way: they see your public posts without you seeing theirs. The number of friends appears on your profile, and for many people it is the first thing a new contact sees.

Facebook friend requests send requests to your personal profile. When you accept them, your friends count grows. They suit people who are building a personal profile for work, such as agents, coaches, freelancers and local professionals.

How friend requests work

• Order with your profile link, such as facebook.com/yourprofile.
• Requests arrive in your Friend Requests list.
• You accept them; only accepted requests become friends.

Nothing changes until you accept. That keeps you in control: you can accept all of them, or go through the list and accept the ones you are happy with. Accepting requests in batches over several days looks more natural than accepting hundreds at once.

Settings to check first

• In Settings, under how people find and contact you, make sure "Who can send you friend requests" is set to Everyone. If it is set to "Friends of friends", the requests cannot reach you.
• Make sure your profile is not locked, where that feature exists in your country.
• Use a personal profile. Pages do not have friends; for Pages, see Facebook followers and Facebook likes.

The 5,000-friend limit

Facebook limits personal profiles to 5,000 friends. Once you reach it, you cannot accept more requests, but people can still follow you. If you are close to the limit, consider turning on public posts so people can follow you, or move your audience to a Page.

Make your profile ready for new friends

New friends will look at your profile. Add a clear profile photo and a cover photo, fill in your work and location, and write a short intro that says what you do. Post a few public updates about your work, and pin a featured post that introduces you. A profile that looks real and active makes people comfortable with the connection, and makes the friends count look earned.

How many requests look natural

Grow in steps. A brand-new profile that jumps from 40 friends to 4,000 in a week looks odd to anyone who notices, and accepting very large numbers at once can trigger Facebook's checks. A few hundred at a time, accepted over a few days, looks like a profile that is growing through work and groups.

A worked example

A newly licensed estate agent sets up a professional-looking personal profile with a photo, a cover showing the local area and a featured post introducing their services. They order friend requests and accept them in batches over a week. Over the following months, they post new listings and local market notes publicly, and their friends list gives the profile the look of someone well connected in the area. When a client searches for them, the profile backs up their business card.

Use groups to make real connections

For a personal profile used for work, Facebook groups are where many real connections start. Join groups for your area or your industry, answer questions helpfully, and share your expertise without selling in every post. People who find your answers useful often send friend requests themselves. A friends count that already looks established makes those people more comfortable connecting with you.

Keep your profile safe

Turn on two-factor authentication in Facebook's security settings and never share your password or login codes with anyone, including us. We never need them. If anyone asks for your login to deliver friend requests, it is not a service you should use.

Friends, privacy and what you share

Once you accept a request, that person can see posts you share with friends. If your profile is mainly for work, set your default post audience to Public for work updates and use Friends or custom lists for anything personal. Facebook's audience selector on each post lets you choose. You can also add new contacts to a list such as "Work" so you control what they see, and you can unfriend anyone at any time.

• Set friend requests to Everyone.
• Use your personal profile link, not a Page.
• Check that you are well below the 5,000-friend limit.

What friend requests do not do

Friend requests add requests you can accept. They do not like your posts, comment or message you, and they do not add followers to a Page. Engagement comes from the real people you connect with.
