Server settings that can block activity

Discord servers have several settings that stop new members from talking straight away. The verification level can require a verified email or phone, or a wait of several minutes after joining. Membership rules screening can require new members to accept the rules first. Before ordering, check Server Settings, under Safety Setup or Moderation, and make sure the channels you want activity in are open to the default member role.

Which channels to use

Activity looks most natural in a general chat channel, not in announcement or rules channels. Pin a welcome message, add a few channels with clear names and post something yourself first, so new visitors see a server that is set up and run by someone, not just a busy chat.

Why activity matters more than members

A Discord invite preview shows how many members a server has and how many are online. Once someone joins, though, they judge the server by its channels. A general chat whose last message was two weeks ago tells them the community is over. A channel with recent messages, replies and reactions tells them people are here and talking, which makes them far more likely to say hello and stay.

• Pick the channel you want activity in, usually your general or welcome chat.

A worked example

A tabletop gaming group launches a Discord for players in its city. The organiser sets up channels for events, looking-for-group and general chat, adds a welcome message and orders members and some message activity for the general channel. When the invite link goes up on the group's Instagram and at the local game shop, new players find a server with conversation already going, introduce themselves and sign up for the next game night.

Keep it safe

As a server grows, spam and raids become a risk. Use Discord's AutoMod, set sensible verification levels once the order is complete, and add trusted moderators. A friendly, well-moderated server keeps real members around; a chaotic one loses them, however busy it looks.

Review your server every few weeks: archive channels nobody uses, update the welcome message and thank the members who keep conversations going.
