Plays give a track the numbers to be taken seriously

The play count sits on every SoundCloud track, and it's the first thing anyone checks - listeners, curators, and the DJs and bloggers who dig through the platform for new music. A strong play count reads as a track that's already found an audience. That makes people more willing to give it their time, and more likely to like it, repost it or get in touch.

SoundCloud is crowded, and a great track with 60 plays is easy to skip. The same track with 25,000 plays gets a proper listen.

Plays aren't a royalty strategy

SoundCloud pays some artists for listening through its monetisation programmes, and its terms prohibit artificially inflated plays. Bought plays shouldn't be treated as a way to earn royalties - SoundCloud can exclude plays it considers invalid from payouts and statistics. What plays are good for is how a track looks: a visible play count that changes how listeners, curators and promoters perceive it.

Delivery

Plays are delivered over one to two days by default. For a release campaign, a slower speed lets the count grow steadily across the week, at the same price.

Balance the numbers

Tracks with lots of plays usually have some likes, reposts and comments too. After a big play order, a modest number of likes keeps the track looking natural, and a few followers stop the profile looking thin next to it.

Making the most of the momentum

• Artwork and title matter. They're what people see in streams and search before they press play.
• Tag the genre and mood so listeners searching for it can find the track.
• Share the link everywhere - your other socials, your mailing list, the promoters you're pitching.
• Ask for reposts from artists and channels in your scene; reposts put the track in new streams.

A worked example

A DJ uploads a two-hour mix to pitch for a residency. He orders 2,000 plays ($108.18) over a week, adds 100 likes, and sends the link to the venue. The promoter opens a mix that clearly has listeners.

Get the track ready before the plays arrive

Plays bring attention to a track page, so make sure the page is ready for it. Listeners who arrive because the number looks strong will judge the rest of the page in seconds.

• Public, with downloads and embeds as you want them. Plays can only be added to a public track, and a track people can embed is easier for bloggers to feature.
• A description that says who you are. A line about the release, credits for collaborators and a link to your other profiles help a curious listener take the next step.
• A clear genre and a few tags. These are how the track shows up when people search or browse.
• A cover image made for small screens. Most people see your artwork as a thumbnail in a stream or on a phone.

Single, EP or mix

Each order goes to one track link. For an EP or album, order plays for the lead single first, since that is the track you will be sharing and pitching. The other tracks can follow in smaller orders so the release looks evenly listened to, rather than one track at 20,000 plays and the rest at 40. Long DJ mixes work the same way, as a single track.

Reading your stats afterwards

SoundCloud's own statistics show where real listeners come from: other tracks, playlists, search, or links from outside the platform. After a play order, those sources are the useful thing to watch. If a blog post, a repost or a playlist starts sending listeners, that is the channel to invest in next. Plays raise the number; the stats tell you what is working.

Pitching with a stronger track page

When you send a track to a promoter, a label or a playlist curator, they usually click the link before they listen to the email. A page that already has plays, likes and a few comments gets a fairer hearing than one that looks unheard. Send the pitch after delivery has finished, not while the count is still climbing.
