Pinterest works differently, and followers still count

Pinterest is less a social network than a visual search engine. People come with a plan - a kitchen redesign, a wedding, a recipe, an outfit - and search for ideas. Most people discover your pins through search and their home feed rather than by following you. So why followers? Because once someone likes a pin and clicks through to your profile, the follower count is how they judge whether you're worth following for more. A profile with 30 followers looks like a hobby; one with 5,000 looks like a trusted source.

Followers also see new pins from you in their home feed, and for businesses and bloggers the profile is often the first impression before someone visits your website.

Pinterest followers are Worldwide, at $4 per 50:

• 2,500 followers: $150

Who it suits

• Shops selling products people plan for - homeware, fashion, crafts, weddings.
• Bloggers in food, travel, parenting and DIY, where Pinterest sends real website traffic.
• Designers and creators using Pinterest as a portfolio.

Make the profile worth following

• Switch to a business account - it's free, and gives you analytics.
• Claim your website so your name and profile picture appear on pins from your site.
• Organise boards by topic with names people would search for - "Small bathroom ideas", not "Stuff I like".
• Pin consistently. Pinterest rewards accounts that add fresh pins regularly.
• Write keyword-rich pin titles and descriptions. That's how Pinterest search finds you.

Monthly views vs followers

Pinterest profiles can show monthly views - how often your pins were seen - alongside followers. Many profiles have far more views than followers, which is normal for a search-driven platform. Followers add credibility to that number.

An honest note

Pinterest removes accounts it considers spam, so small drops can happen. Contact support with your order ID and profile link if you notice one.

A worked example

A handmade ceramics shop has 90 Pinterest followers and pins product photos linking to its store. It orders 500 followers ($34) over a week, reorganises its boards by product type, and claims its website. Visitors who find a mug through search land on a profile that looks like an established shop.

How many followers to order

On Pinterest, follower counts tend to be smaller than on other networks, because many people use it to search rather than to follow. A business or blogger profile with a few hundred to a couple of thousand followers looks established. For a new profile, a first order of 100 to 500 is a sensible start. Add more in steps as you publish fresh Pins.

Organise your boards first

New followers, and the visitors who arrive after them, judge your profile by its boards. Clear board names that match what people search for, such as "Small kitchen ideas" or "Minimalist wedding decor", make the profile look useful at a glance. Put your most relevant boards first, add a short description to each, and remove old boards that no longer fit your brand.

Keep pinning after the order

Pinterest favours fresh Pins, meaning new images, rather than re-saves of the same image. Followers see what you pin in their home feed, so a steady rhythm of a few new Pins a week gives the new audience something to see. Tall images with a short text overlay, clear titles and keyword-rich descriptions help each Pin show up in search too.

Claim your website

If you link to your own site, claim it in your Pinterest settings. Claimed sites show your name on Pins that link to them and unlock analytics for those Pins. Together with a follower count that looks established, it makes your profile look like the official account behind your brand.

Pair followers with saves

Followers make the profile look trusted; saves (repins) make individual Pins spread. For a launch or a key blog post, add repins to the Pin you are promoting so it travels further than your own followers.

Example: a home-décor blog

A home-décor blogger with 90 Pinterest followers reorganises their boards around the room types readers search for, then orders 500 worldwide followers ($34 with the 15% package discount). Over the next month they add three fresh Pins a week. Visitors arriving from search see a profile with an audience and boards worth following, and the follower count keeps growing on its own.
